You don't want to select your entire army at once and just click attack on an enemy unit. You want to avoid flanking, you want to avoid bunching up, etc. You want to utilise each unit individually to ensure that they are being used to their utmost effectiveness. Imagine if in Rome 2 all the factions functioned normally for a Total War game. Besides many other problems, there is one very serious problem with the Brits that makes them feel like a square block that is trying to be fit into a circular hole. You can feel it if you've played a lot with the Americans and Wehrmacht.
